Village Voices
Contact: Pam Knight,
Meeting venue: The Chapel rooms every Thursday from 7.30pm - 9.30pm.
Village Voices was formed in September 1992 and has continued to flourish
since. The music director is Ian Clarke who is also a very experienced
organist.
We have about 18 - 20 members and sing a variety of music. We usually
sing some sort of Christmas cantata or choral work which ends with audience
participation. During the Lent Term we may sing anything from Faure
Requiem to Rutter's Requiem, or maybe a Mozart Mass. In the Summer Term
we sing a more lighthearted programme of music, which can range from
Madrigals, Barber-shop, Spirituals, Nursery Rhymes but with jazzy harmonies.
We finish with a concert in the Village Hall and a soloist is usually
included, eg, trombone, violinist, pianist, didgeridoo!
Afterwards there is usually a cold buffet supper with wine.
Anyone is most welcome to come along any Thursday to sing. No voice
test is required. We welcome sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. If
anyone needs to know more about the choir please contact Pam Knight.
Walgrave Monday Club
Meeting venue: - The Baptist Chapel Schoolroom.
Times:- Monday Afternoons 2pm - 4pm
This is an afternoon get- together for the over 50's which was first
started as a Derby & Joan Club in the 1960's. We play a variety of games
including Bridge, Whist, Dominoes and Scrabble. The afternoon is a social
time with tea & home made cakes and an opportunity to meet friends and
exchange news. New members are always welcome. During the year we organize
various outings to places of interest.
Walgrave Women's Institute
Meeting Venue: The Baptist Schoolroom
Meeting Date: Third Monday of the Month at 7.30pm
The Women's Institute is usually thought of as being typically English,
but in fact the original branch was founded in Stoney Creek, Canada
in 1897. It wasn't until June 1915 that it came to these shores, starting
in Llanfair (Wales!). Today the WI has some 220,000 members.
The Walgrave branch, which started in 1942, has almost 50 members.
Although branches are now to be found in urban and rural areas the purpose
of the WI remains unchanged. To offer women the opportunity to influence
local, national and world issues affecting the social, economic and
environmental life of families and communities, and to learn traditional
and new skills.
We meet monthly usually with a presentation by a guest speaker, and
arrange local walks and events. There are activities within Northamptonshire
that we can participate in as well as visits to national events such
as the Good Food Show and trips abroad. Many of these outings are open
to friends and families.
A residential college near Oxford offers short courses. These range
from Aromatherapy to Watercolours via such things as Belly Dancing,
Golf, and Therapy Tasters. Why not come along to a meeting as a visitor?
It will only cost you 50p.
Walgrave Gardening Club
Contact: John Beale
Despite Spring knocking on our garden gates, the usually active members
of the Club have yet to meet to plan a programme of visits. It is expected
that visits will take place on Friday evenings, once a month, to a garden
of particular interest or, sometimes on a Saturday or Sunday, a little
further afield to a centre of excellence or a National Trust Garden.
Likely candidates are gardens in Kingsthorpe and Harborough Road Northampton
, part of the National Collection of pentstemons in Desborough and Cottesbrooke.
National Trust gardens could include Lyveden New Bield near Oundle,
and Hidcote-a garden in Gloucestershire. The new plant kingdom building
near Coventry on the site of the National Organic Gardening H/Q will
be worth visiting.
Should you wish to join our group of activists, please contact John
Beale

Walgrave Amber F.C
Contact:
Meeting venue: Mawsley
Walgrave is home to one of Northamptonshire's oldest football teams. Formed in 1896, the club played in the Northamptonshire League (subsequently to become the United Counties League), the Kettering & District Combination League, and more recently the Northants Central Conmbination League.
In the last years of the 20th century, the club was forced to fold, and played for a while under the name Walgrave Royal Oak. After a gap of some 12 years, Walgrave Amber FC was reformed by David Rhodes. It formally re-affiliated with the Northants FA in 2007 and re-joined the Northants Combination League in time for the start of the 2008/9 season.
