NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH and WALGRAVE
Crime is an unfortunate part of village life. Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is all about reducing crime and reducing opportunities for criminals. Walgrave has a successful NHW, which works due to the cooperation existing between the residents, the NHW and the Police.
Many crimes are carried out by opportunist criminals, so even taking basic security precautions and removing the opportunities will have a noticeable effect.
You are not expected to intervene if you see something suspicious - you are not the Police. Make a note and pass on the information as soon as possible ~ for example, if you see a strange vehicle parked in the village, bogus callers or a stranger behaving in a suspicious way.
If you have to look twice, report it!
Please take the following action immediately if you see
Crime in progress - dial 999
Other incidents or suspicious events - dial 101
or if you wish to remain anonymous, call
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
or report on line here

TELL-TALE EXHAUSTS
& FROSTY MORNINGS
With the possible return of the frosty and snowy weather, please pass this reminder to as many of your neighbours and friends as possible.
Every year at this time when there is a hard frost and/or snow on the ground and on the windscreen, thieves gets up early. They spend their mornings driving around villages and housing estates looking for the tell tale puff of an exhaust pipe.
When they find a vehicle that has been left unattended with its engine running to warm the interior or to defrost windows, they simply jump in and drive it away - often the victim has to watch as the thief drives away in their vehicle. Such an incident occurred at around 8am this morning 27 January) in Chatsworth Avenue, Northampton. The victim heard their vehicle being driven away at speed after going back into the house for a brief moment.
A police spokesperson said: “It is vital that vehicles are clear of frost and snow before driving, but we would always advise motorists to stay with their vehicle whilst defrosting. We would urge everyone not to be tempted to leave your vehicle unattended at any time with its engine running.
It only takes seconds to remove the ignition key and lock the doors - it only takes the thief seconds to jump in and drive off. In addition, leaving your keys inside the vehicle may well invalidate your insurance!
Residents are also advised to make sure that their vehicles are always locked even if only leaving them unattended for five minutes; never leave property on display or 'hidden' in the boot and glove box at any time of day, including any indication of a Sat Nav system - such as 'sucker marks' on the windscreen, and activate any alarm systems.
Please remember to keep an eye open for any persons and/or vehicles you think may be suspicious - there are plenty of 'opportunists' around, not just the ones trying to take your vehicle.

Fraudulent letter warning - new
Northamptonshire Police is warning of a fraudulent letter currently being sent to households across the county. The financial crime team has been made aware of a significant number received in the Wellingborough area.
The letter, which is addressed to the recipient using their initial and surname, claims the recipient is due a large sum of money as they have been named as a beneficiary of a financial portfolio worth $10.5m US dollars, currently held at the Public Bank of Hong Kong, following the death of a long lost relative.
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said, “This letter is a scam which is clearly intended to take advantage of the elderly or vulnerable leading up to the festive period.
"It is written to a poor standard of English and in a particularly forceful tone; however the naming of the intended recipient and some of the content can be convincing.
"We are urging the relatives of the elderly and vulnerable, to raise their family member’s awareness to these types of letters and ensure they know they are fraudulent and should not be responded to in anyway.
"The further we can spread this message, the more chance we have of stopping someone becoming a victim of this crime before it's too late".
Anyone with information should call Northamptonshire Police on 101 - alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
